ILFRACOMBE crews faced tough competition at the 40th annual Men's Pilot Gig Championship in Newquay.

Ninety-six crews from all over the UK and from Holland and Ireland competed in a series of knock out rounds.

Ilfracombe A crew of Keith Barclay, Jason Chubb, Jack Turner, Dion Hunt, John Stanbury, Ian Halls and coxswain Nell Trotter made an impressive start, finishing second in their first heat to take them comfortably into the next round. Round two saw them battle against some of the top crews and again finish second to reach the quarter finals, among the top 24 crews in the world.

The quarters proved tough, with challenging swell and an increasing wind. Ilfracombe fought hard to finish fifth and 17th overall. A great result to finish just their second season of racing.

Ilfracombe B crew Roy Thorne, Ben Boudier, Lee Kift, Barry Turner, Mo Embrey, Stuart Dagley and cox Lisa Furborough drew the Dutch and some of the top crews in their opening race and finished fourth, missing qualification to the next round.
