Challenging 10k and 3k routes both attract big numbers as Bideford AAC’s Richmond sets the pace

THE SIXTH Swimbridge Fun Run saw more than 200 runners take to the course for the 10k and 3k runs.

The race, sponsored by Davison’s Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, started at the Glebe Field and saw an increase of more than 70 in the number of entrants on last year.

The winner of the 3k was Alex Walker of North Devon Athletics Club in a time of 12mins 56secs.

The first female 3k runner was Eevee-May Banbury of North Devon Athletics Club, who was also the fastest lady last year, this time recording a time 13:24.

Bideford AAC’s Ronnie Richmond was the fastest over 10k, crossing the line in 37:50 to retain the title he won last year.

He was followed in second place by Peter Sutton with Keith Shapland of Bideford Athletic Club third.

The quickest female was Eyvoll Aston of Teignbridge Trotters, who ran it in 49:39. Jo Sleep came second and Kathryn Guard was third.

Mitchell Barclay came sixth to take his place as the fastest Swimbridge runner.

Event organiser Julie Whitton said: “The runners had a fantastic run. Swimbridge is surrounded by hills providing us with a challenging and interesting course that takes our runners through fields, woodlands, stiles, bridges and picturesque hamlets.

“We have received some amazing feedback, and even though the course is tough runners have expressed that they want more of it.”

Swimbridge Run is a community event which the people of Swimbridge give amazing support. 80 volunteers from the village give up their time, 50 of whom steward the route.

The event is expected to raise over £2,000 in aid of Swimbridge Jubilee Hall.
