Barnstaple boxers Rob Squires and Joe Freeman went to Essex for the last boxing show at the historic Dukes Hall venue at Hornchurch.

Squires lost on points to Chalvedon boxer and schools champion Charlie Woodrough in a high action bout.

The taller and slightly heavier Essex boxer made most of the forward movements, with Squires looking to counter from the southpaw stance and having some success in the first round. But Woodrough kept his opponent at the end of his longer reach and dominated for the rest of the bout to gain a unanimous points verdict.

A more controversial bout followed as Freeman took on Jake Smith from Southend in a torrid affair, with Smith being warned more than once for holding and restricting Freeman’s movement. Barnstaple supporters felt Freeman showed the cleaner work and scoring shots, but the judges saw it differently, giving the victory to Smith by two points.

Liam Laird from the Barnstaple returned to the ring in a close bout at the Downend club’s show in Bristol, against the home club’s Ben Demmary. Although giving a good display of southpaw counterpunching, it was not quite enough to overcome the home boxer’s workrate and he lost on a unanimous points decision.

Barnstaple junior Pat Morton gave a goo display to gain a unanimous win against the Downend club’s Morgan Hart, winning all three rounds.

All these boxers will be in action at the forthcoming Barnstaple ABC open show in the Pannier Market on Sunday, May 27.
