HATHERLEIGH became the first team to beat Devon C Division leaders Dartington & Totnes this season - and they did it in some style, by 113 runs.

Hatherleigh were making solid if unspectacular progress until sixth-wicket pair Hugh Romans and Richard Tidall came together at 159 for six.

Romans, who was already in, went on to make an unbeaten 106, which came off 73 balls and included 13 fours and two sixes.

Tidball contributed 51 not out to a stand of 111 unbroken for the seventh wicket, which took Hatherleigh to 270 for six.

The wickets to fall were shared by Ryan Stevenson (2-74), Matt Thurlow (2-43) and Richard Sugden (2-26).

Dartington & Totnes, who only had 10 players, reached 69 without loss thanks to Bertus Loots (40) and Jono Lloyd (20).

Although Harold Stevenson (25) and Harry Baxendale (22) contributed, D&T could not stop Gary Chatham (4-43) and Simon Gillespie shooting them out for 157.

Victory lifts Hatherleigh to third in the table, nine points behind second-placed Thorverton.
