HATHERLEIGH captain Ross Cherrington ended up regretting his decision to bat first against visiting Sidmouth in the top-against-bottom clash at Bridge Road.

Leaders Hatherleigh totted up 307 for three, but were frustrated by Sidmouth's blocking tactics as they paddled to a draw at 171 for seven.

"It's always tempting to bat first on a hot day, but it ended up almost certainly costing us a win," said Cherrington.

Cherrington's displeasure was no doubt tempered by looking at the A Division 2nd XI table to see that Hatherleigh are 36 points ahead of second-placed Plymouth 3rd XI and 52 clear of Budleigh in third.

Terry Reynolds, who stayed at home with the 2nd XI as he could not travel with the first team to Clyst Hydon, top scored with 84 for Hatherleigh.

Mike Jones (48) and Reynolds put on 109 for the first wicket and the runs just kept on coming.

Reynolds and Tom Rogers (53) added 43 then Jon Rogers (73) joined Reynolds to notch 148 for the fourth wicket.

Pick of Sidmouth's bowlers with two for 36 was Andy Green.

Tom Overthrow was Sidmouth's top scorer with 50 not out as they plodded along to the draw.

Sidmouth were 117 for four with 20 overs to go and showed no interest in chasing.

Dave Gibson made 42, Mike Dibble had 27 and David Watkins 23.

Cherrington (3-46) and Nick Rogers (3-32) dominated the bowling returns for Hatherleigh.
