HATHERLEIGH were the unlucky losers in the three-way scrap with Plympton and Paignton to avoid relegation from the Premier 2nd XI competition

While Budleigh Salterton could do little to save themselves from going down, Paignton, Hatherleigh, Cornwood and Plympton were scrapping like ferrets in a sack not to go with them.

Plympton beat Exeter by 95 runs to reach 189 points, which Paignton reached after their game at Plymouth was stopped by bad light when it could have gone either way.

The big game was the meeting between Cornwood and Hatherleigh, which the Corns lost by 26 runs.

But Cornwood did enough to make it to 190 points, which took them out of the equation.

Paignton had won six games, one more than Hatherleigh or Plympton, so winning draws were the determining factor.

Plympton had two to Hatherleigh’s one and so held on for another season.

Hatherleigh were all out for 161 against Cornwood – Michael Jones top scoring with 40.

Mark Brock (3-43) and Charlie Neilson (3-1) bowled Cornwood out for 135, with assistance from Ross Cherrington (2-35) and Rob Cockwill (2-33).

North Devon finished on a high when they routed Budleigh Salterton by 49 runs

Richard Screech hit a top score of 68 for North Devon and Rob Hearne chipped in with 44 towards a total of 185 all out.

Tim Cooke’s six for 51 haul sent Budleigh crashing to 136 all out with Ian Taylor stranded on 69 not out while wickets tumbled at the other end.

Braunton lost by 84 runs at Chudleigh in their final A Division 2nd XI game of the season.

Braunton only had eight men for the trip to Kate Brook – and did well to limit Chudleigh to 236 for five. Mark Heather top scored with 84 while Mark Johnson took three for 34 for Braunton.

Waleed Iqbal made 52 and Ian Roberts 40, but with only seven wickets to take Braunton were always vulnerable.

Graeme Wilson took five of them at a cost of 42 runs as Braunton were dismissed for 152.
