North Devon Hockey Club 1st XI started their West Division 2 South League campaign with a 5-1 away win at Plymouth Grammar School Old Boys 2nd XI, on Saturday.

PGSOB started strongly, pressing the away team deep into their own half, but two counter attacking goals from Sam Kirkness and Pete Smale saw North Devon take the lead into the half-time break.

An unfortunate own goal from Ben Cox at the beginning of the second half closed the gap to 2-1, but North Devon were able to take advantage of PGSOB's continued attempts to throw men forward in their search for an equaliser: late breakaway goals from David Orr, Ashley Thorne and Pete Smale secured all three points for the North Devonians.

"We were robust in defence and clinical in attack, fully deserving the points", summed up Captain Orr after the match.
