DEVON League chiefs have stumped up £1,000 towards the running costs of the new David Shepherd Cricket Foundation being launched at Instow this Sunday.
The foundation, named in memory of former Test match umpire and Devon cricketer and Instow's most famous resident David Shepherd, has been set up by Devon CCC to develop young players.
Shepherd died last year after fighting cancer for more than a year.
The foundation team - the Devon Lions - will take on an XI put together by Shepherd's old Gloucestershire and Devon team-mate Jack Davey.
Stuart Munday, who is the vice-chairman of the Devon League, became a close friend of Shepherd's while working in Bristol in the 1960s. The pair had become acquainted when Munday played for Tavistock and Shepherd was turning out for North Devon CC.
Munday said it was fitting that the league contributed towards the new venture as it is a proving ground for potential Devon players.
"We talked about it in committee and virtually agreed that players between 17 and 21 are going to be spotted playing in the Devon League," said Munday.
"Shep would be delighted to know an initiative like this is running in his name as he was always keen to encourage young players."
The donation has been welcomed by Devon's director of cricket Roger Newman, who said: "It is a great gesture by the Devon League and shows how the league and the county club can work together for the benefit of young cricketers in Devon."
Newman has put together a team of young Devon prospects for the game - including all three Bess brothers from Sidmouth.
Davey is still working on the Shepherd XI, but definites inked for the game include former Devon captains Bob Dawson and Nick Folland, ex-Somerset and England A keeper Rob Turner, Gareth Townsend (Somerset and Devon) and Plympton captain Arwyn Jones.
Thw Lions team is being captained by North Devon batsman Dan Bowser.
The Lions XI is: D Bowser (North Devon, capt), M Thompson (Torquay), G Chappell (Bradninch),J Bess, Z Bess, L Bess (all Sidmouth), B Huxtable (Braunton), S Benton (Paignton), M Hickey, N Watkin (both Torquay), A Kingdon (Bovey Tracey), T Field (Paignton), R Acton (Bradninch).
