NORTH Devon teams filled the top two positions in the first round of the 2008 Mini Swimming League at Crediton.Defending champions Barnstaple SC led the way, with Torridgeside not far behind, followed by hosts Crediton and Tiverton.Barnstaple scored 191 points on the back of 17 individual and nine relay wins. An all round effort by the whole squad, which included 15 personal bests. Torridgeside swimmers gained nine individual wins and five in the relays as they mounted up 155 points. Their youngsters chalked up 23 personal best times.Crediton scored 136 pts and Tiverton 104 pts. Levon Hutchinson of Barnstaple won an impressive four individual races in two different age groups, including three personal best times. Team-mate Ryan Bennett bagged first place in three events, also across two different age groups. Masters of the pool Barnstaple Swimming Club's Annie Humphris and Chris Moore were medal winning stars at the Welsh Open Masters gala held at the National Pool in Swansea. Ann won three gold medals in the long distance freestyle races of 400, 800 and 1500 metres in the women's 70-74 years age group. Chris came back to North Devon with a haul of five medals from an exhausting programme of eight races in the men's 45-49 years group and only just missed out on another podium place.He gained silver in the 50m back, 200m back and 200 ind medley and bronze in the 100m back and 50m fly.Barnstaple masters swimmers participate in a number of training sessions each week, including Saturday mornings.
