A good run for Barnstaple Bowling Club member Marion Redfern started as a member of the mixed triple winners at the Lynton & Lynmouth B C`s invitation tournament.
This was followed by qualification into the second day of the Devon Unbadged Singles, where she beat Braunton’s Lorraine Tucker 21–20 in her first match and then had an excellent win over the in form Betty Horwood of Bideford by 21–17 to gain a place in the Section 1 final. She will now play Bideford’s Mary Welsh for a place in the Devon quarter finals.
Barnstaple’s John Short has also had a successful run. He went to United Services for the first day of the Devon Singles and progressed into day two with wins over Ilfracombe’s Tony Knollman and Barrie Rumsam and concluded with a 21–3 win over Section Secretary Martin Rowe.
Playing on his home green on day two, John beat Hatherleigh’s Martin Sexton 21–9 and Combe Martin’s Dave Mason 21–4 to progress to the County semi quarter finals.
Going through with John are Bideford members Graham Wonnacott and Dave Mason.
Jackie Hemmings-Anthony of Barnstaple was a member of Devon Ladies Johns Trophy team in their win over Dorset, linking up with mixed pairs partner Nigel Short in an excellent game against Babs Turner and Shaun Watts.
The match went to an extra end, with the Barnstaple pair just losing out to the last bowl of the match. Jackie was also involved in a tremendous tussle with North Tawton’s Nikki Payne in the third round of the National Champion of Champions.
With the match swinging from one player to the other it was decided, as Jackie stood 20–19 up, by a close measure for two shots that went in favour of North Tawton to snatch the game.
The announcement of the Devon team to play the National Johns Trophy quarter final against Surrey on Saturday sees Barum`s Jackie Hemmings-Anthony hold her place in the team as lead for Honiton`s Sue Evans.
