EIGHT racing pilot gigs from across the region took part in the second annual Bridge Gig Race from Bideford to Barnstaple on Saturday.Starting within sight of the Bideford Old Bridge, the racers rowed down the River Torridge and under the new Torridge Bridge before going up the River Taw to Barnstaple Bridge.Defying the cold and wet weather, the ladies then held their race back from Barnstaple to Appledore. The event was organised by Appledore Pilot Gig Club in association with Barnstaple Link Rotary Club.Len White of the Appledore Club said they were delighted with the entry and the race was now truly established on the gig racing map. There were close finishes in both races. Bristol finished just one-and-a-half lengths in front of Appledore in the men's event. The ladies' race produced a one-two for Torridgeside, with Bude in third place.
