The AEGON GB Pro-Series Barnstaple tournament got underway at the Tarka Tennis Centre yesterday (Tuesday) and continues until Sunday.

This top women’s tournament, with a prize fund of $75,000, has again attracted some of the world’s top 100 players from many nations. They include British No 2 and reigning tournament champion Anne Keothavong, who is back to defend her title.

Last year saw Keothavong dominate the tournament, winning her second Barnstaple title - she was victorious in 2008 - and her first Barnstaple doubles crown with Czech partner Eva Birnerova

Profits from the ticket receipts at this event are re-invested back into the venue’s coaching programmes for the benefit of tennis players in North Devon.

This year there are free coaching sessions available during the tournament.

This week Tarka is running some free ‘new to tennis’ adult coaching sessions during the ladies event. If you don’t play and would like to have a try, go along and you might also see some top world class tennis at the same time.

Dates & times are: Weds 6-7.30 (free to watch ladies event tennis from 5.30pm); Friday 6-7.30 (free to watch ladies event tennis from 5.30pm); Saturday 10-11am (ladies event starts at 12pm, so a ticket would cost £6 to watch after your session).
