BARNSTAPLE’S losing run in National Three South West continued when they went down 18-11 in the Devon derby at Newton Abbot.

Barnstaple squandered an early chance to go ahead when Joe Wearne missed a fourth-minute penalty.

Alex Jeffrey didn’t miss when he had the chance to put Newton ahead, but the lead was short lived as Barum centre Jonny Carter scored an overlap try for the visitors.

After Jeffrey landed a second penalty, Newton were never behind again. Just before half time Ben Cole got on the scoresheet for the first time after Sandy Brown, Toby Borrow and Thor Normann led a breakout from the home goal line. Jeffrey converted.

There was no more scoring until the 65th minute when Cole cashed in after Barney Loader had made the breakout. Two minutes into time added on Barum salvaged a bonus point when Grant Tuhakariana knocked over a penalty.

Barnstaple are at home to second-placed Old Patesians this Saturday.
