THE New Year has brought cup time for North Devon Table Tennis League with the Ramsey Trophy competition open to all league teams and played on a handicap, knockout basis.Handicaps worked well, with five teams from each division left in the competition.League leaders Smugglers were too strong for Holsworthy B, winning 7-2 and still maintaining their unbeaten doubles record despite the handicap.Last season's winners Loxhore were beaten by Misfits, the Division 1 team's consistency proving too steep a learning curve for the youngsters.Littleham gave a good performance to beat Cruisers, who had previously beaten them 9-1 in the league. Hopefuls gave their season a boost at the expense of Adjudicators. The handicap was much in their favour, but they still had to get the points against good opposition.Tony Grenfall was on fine form to win both his singles.Sweenies were knocked out by Division 2 leaders Castle Knights in a match that finished at five games after an injury to Dave Trett that will keep him out for some time. A real disappointment for Dave, who was hoping to celebrate his 80th birthday in league action next month. Results: Artics4, Herons 5; Hopefuls 5, Adjudicators 4; Littleham 5, Cruisers 3;Loxhore 1, Misfits 8; Smashers 7, Rowdies 2; Smugglers 7, Holsworthy B 2;Sweenies 0, Castle Knights 5; Tornados 0, Holsworthy A 8; Combe IA v Dolphins (postponed).Quarter final draw: Littleham or Herons v Misfits; Smashers v Hopefuls; Holsworthy A v Castle Knights; Combe IA or Dolphins v Smugglers.
