YOUNGSTERS of Orchard Vale School in Barnstaple have just finished a successful cross country season - with an armful of trophies to prove it!

Orchard Vale entered the North Devon Cross Country League for the third year in September and has come away with three team trophies. Children competed monthly from September to February on Sunday mornings and in cold and often muddy conditions.

The school has also had success in the Kingsley Millennium Run, St. Petroc’s Run in Bude and Park School’s PEDPASS Cross Country runs and children have also had individual successes.

Inspired by their success and enthusiasm, some of the pupils asked if the school could run a cross country club, so they could do extra training. The club currently has 30 children who train all year round in all types of weather conditions and it is now aimed to run two sessions a week during lunchtimes.

Orchard Vale pupils have also competed in runs outside of school, including the 2011 Great West Half Marathon Challenge and some have gone on to join North Devon Athletic Club, competing against other Devon clubs.
