A cracking 18 pound six ounce cod has been landed from a North Devon mark. Ian Hooper was fishing with Kyle Blackmore when the fish-of-a-lifetime took his bait to prove there are indeed decent cod in local waters. To cap a memorable night of fishing, Kyle also landed a very unseasonal 9lb smoothound. At Blakewell near Barnstaple, colder waters of late have prompted some hard fighting from the resident brown and rainbow trout, some of which are now being stocked into double figure weights. With lower temperatures, anglers have benefitted from using intermediate lines and gold heads. As the day warms, be prepared to change to a floater as the fish have been rising to make the most of the fly hatches. For the traditionalists, a black buzzer, bloodworm or the black and peacock spider are also catching their share of the fish. Notable catches in January included a 4lb brown for John Shepherd, while Danny Ford had a magnificent 5lb 10oz brown. Other catches saw a 6lb brown for Simon Baggs, one of 5lb 4oz for David Holby and Phil Martin had a six fish bag weighing 24lb which included three rainbows and three browns, with the best being a 7lb 8oz brown. At Stafford Moors Lodge Lake, Craig Lacey landed carp of 20lb and 18lb during a day session, while Dean Elder had a 19lb beauty from the spit on Lodge.
