WESTLEIGH Cricket Club will on Saturday be celebrating the rising of its clubhouse from the ashes.

Players and supporters were shocked when in September 2010 their clubhouse was burned to the ground.

But after more than a year of fund raising and generous support a £30,000 project to build a new clubhouse has been completed and on Saturday it will be officially opened.

The opening is due to take place at 11am and the day will be marked by a three-way tournament between the club team, an Old Boys team and the local pub team.

Fun and games and a barbecue will also help turn the day into a social event, with an open invitation to players and supporters old and new.

New Ilfracombe Cricket Club skipper Nathan Townsend started the season with a six-wicket win over Newton Tracey at Killacleave on Saturday.

Newton Tracey were indebted to Andy Chatham, who carried his bat for 58no. Jon Whormseley (27) opened with him, but once he was out, no else reached double figures against some tidy bowling, the most successful being Nigel Fairchild 2-24 from nine overs in his first game for four years and Jason Newman 2-20 from eight overs.

Newton’s total of 144 off 40 overs was always going to be difficult to defend and although they took an early wicket, Mark Creek (58), Chris Harris (32) and Mark Cavanagh (26) saw Ilfracombe home with 11 overs to spare.
