Chulmleigh College’s Key Stage Four girls clinched bronze at the finals of the National Schools Badminton Championships.

The team of Learna Herkes, Eleanor O'Callaghan, Zoe Le Feuvre and Lauren Patmore were in action at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes, representing the South West.

Teams from the nine regions went into groups of three, and played each other in both singles and doubles formats. Winners of each group went into another round of matches to determine medal places, while second and third place finishers played off for the rest of the standings.

The girls came through both their group matches with 4-1 wins to put them on top of the table and guaranteeing them a top-three finish.

They met last year's KS3 winners Walthamstow Hall Independent Girls School and Chelmsford High School Grammar Academy in the final group, losing both matches 4-1 to take the bronze medal.

Chulmleigh's KS3 boys were in action the following day, taking seventh place overall.

The team of Hayden Herkes, Ryan and Evan Dawson and Freddy Elson went into the seventh-to-ninth place play-off after losing their opening two games.

They recovered in the second group, producing a 4-1 win over Wilson's Boys Grammar School and a 3-2 victory over Ponteland High School to finish seventh overall.
