Rain, hail and gales battered contestants at Stafford Moors Easter Match on Sunday but the fish didnt mind. Amid some good weights, Steve Ford stood out with a total of 131 pounds 12 ounces from peg 32 on Tanners Lake. Second went to Brian Harrington with 116lb 10oz and third Ricky Johnston with 95lb 2oz, both fishing Tanners. A Residents Match on Good Friday saw Wayne Boden take first with 99lb 14oz, while Richard James was second with 96lb 7oz and Gordon Smith third on 63lb 15oz. The Winter Pairs League was won by Mark Cullerton and Benjamin Broxham on 18 points. Stafford Moor has been fishing its proverbials off during the past few days: Scott Boag and Inch Morgan fished the summerhouse swim on Beatties and took fish up to 24lb, while Ali Aitken and his friend Taz had more than 20 up to 27lb 8oz from the dam wall on Lodge Lake. Young Alfie Yates, four, was fishing with his dad Karl on the back bays of Beattie and caught some lovely carp, which have no doubt hooked him for life. Oliver Kind had a fine 28lb 2oz fish from the summerhouse swim using Sticky Baits krill, stocked in the on-site shop. More than 30 people braved a cold north-easterly to attend Wistlandpound Open Day, with 21 fishing on the day. Others attended to look at the new boat, supplied by South West Lakes Trust and operated by Wistlandpound Fly Fishing Club, and to find out more about the change from a rainbow to a brown trout fishery. Permits for the fishery are available from www.swlakesfishing.co.uk, the Calvert Trust or Challacombe Post Office. A lone rockling of 1lb 4 ½ oz gave Tony Gussin first place in the March North Devon League heat. The final heat is on April 9\/10 with the weigh-in at Barnstaples Rolle Quay.
