ONE hundred and seventy two competitors made a spectacular sight in and around Bideford on Sunday as they swam the River Torridge, cycled to Barnstaple and back and ran around the town in the third Bideford Triathlon.
The course took competitors on a 600 metre swim in the river, a 23.5 kilometres bike ride and a 5 kilometre run.
First home was Nick Henry Martin of Southfork Racing in 1hr 3mins 30secs, ahead of Gary Gerrard of the Royal Navy Triathlon Association in 1:5:55 and C K Lawson, unattached, in 1:7:58.
Leading local competitor was Chris Stone of North Devon Triathletes, who was fifth overall in 1:8:58, closely followed by Sam Petty of the North Devon Athletic Club, who took sixth place in 1.10.43.
Fellow North Devon triathletes David Spencer and James Marshall were seventh and eight in 1:10.59 and 1.11.00 respectively.
Leading lady was Celia Miall of West Country Triathles in 1:14:10
The event was organised by North Devon Triathletes and Bideford Bridge Rotary Club and helped to raise funds for good causes.
