BIDEFORD Rifle Club is celebrating a successful weekend after winning the Astor Cup competition at the Devon County Rifle Meeting at Moretonhampstead. The club will now go on to represent Devon at the national meeting at Bisley in August.Bideford's Martin Morgan was also victorious at the meeting, winning the Open Prone event and only narrowly missing out on qualifying to represent Devon at the Champion of Champions event at Bisley.Four clubs entered the final with no clear favourite. Budleigh were the first team to go eight points clear after each club had to fire a single Dewar course. But Bideford fought back with some stunning scores to take a six point advantage and win the competition. Martin Morgan was the top scorer for Bideford with 390/400. He also won the Double Dewar Competition in Class A with 779/800 and came second in the Scottish match with 583/600. But his outstanding performance was in the Open Prone with 1165/1200.As the highest placed Devon resident in the two events he also won the Grand Aggregate Cup and Manning Kidd Trophy.Several new members also did well in the meeting with Jon Morris coming second in the Class C English match.Three of them also qualified alongside Martin for the Olympic style shoot, where the leading shooters in each class fire single shots in a specified time period. In this competition Martin finished third in class A, Jon second in class C and Yvonne Hoile and Jack Oliver second and third respectively in class D.
