Young rowers from the Bideford Reds and Bideford Blues joined forces at the weekend to secure a bronze medal at the National Rowing Championships. Nick Wilson from the Reds and Charlie White of the Blues proved a strong pairing at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham, having previously been in competition with each other when racing in single sculls on the local rowing circuit. The two 15 year-old juniors decided to link up to race in a double scull combination at the championships only three weeks ago and produced an impressive performance to finish well up the field in a top quality list of entrants from all over the U.K. The duo raced together on Saturday in a 1500 metre time trial to sift out the best of the group who then raced in a semi final and final over a longer distance of 2000 metres on Sunday. Crews from North Devon have participated in National events of this kind in the past, but the performance of the two Bideford College students ranks well up the list of the best ever in terms of participation on a national stage. The two also raced in single sculls in the same time trial - semi final - final format, with Nick finishing second in the B final and Charlie just a few seconds down and finishing 2nd in the C final. The team are hoping to continue racing together in the double and will also continue their friendly rivalry in the single sculls where they plan to race at other National junior events over the forthcoming months, including the National Trials later in the year.
