Bideford bt Braunton by 38 runs
BRAUNTON gave Bideford a run for their money before going down by 38 runs in a lively derby at Westward Ho!
Josh Roach opened up with a top score of 70 for Bideford, who posted a respectable 237 for nine in 45 overs.
Roach and James Ford (40) put on 118 for the first wicket the both went within a run of each other.
Ford was a first Devon League scalp for Braunton’s Zimbabwean newcomer Artwell Nyambanje, who was recommended to the club by North Devon’s Jas Kalsi after the pair played together in New Zealand during the winter.
There were more runs from Matt Allin (48) and Chris Luxton (23) before wickets fell when the thrash started in the last 10 overs.
Tom Robotham (3-50) and Jon Baglow (3-49) both cashed in.
Braunton had a good go at getting the runs and refused to give up even when the odds were stacked against them.
Having reached 69 for none – Ian Roberts (28) and Rob Collier (37) in the runs – a three-wicket burst from Josh King slowed Braunton down.
King had Roberts caught behind then cleaned out Dave Creswell and Nyambanje in successive balls for three in four.
King hadn’t finished yet as he went through Collier, Robotham and Chris Needham (22) as Braunton dipped to 135 for seven.
Jon Higgs (22) and Mark Mitchell (32no) foughtback and for a while it got interesting.
The lower order were taken out piecemeal with a wicket each for Paul Heard, Ford and Matt Stewart as Bidfeord got the last man out with 199 on the board.
Bideford skipper James Ford said his side could have won by more, but he can’t complain at a derby win that lifted his side to second in the table.
“We got off to a flier and at halfway we were looking at 300 or a declaration, but a mixture of bad shots and good bowling kept the score down,” said Ford.
“Braunton got off to a good start but a match-winning over with three wickets, including their overseas first ball, from Josh King changed the game.
“We are where we want to be at this stage of the season.”
Bideford go to Thorverton while Braunton are at home to Ivybridge this Saturday.
