BIDEFORD cricket coaches Andy Davies and Brian Champion were recognised for their outstanding services to grassroots cricket by Nick Knight at the second NatWest One Day International match in Cardiff yesterday.

They were presented with coaching certificates by the former England batsman as part of the Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme.

Thirteen coaches from around Wales and South West England met with Nick Knight on the pitch during the change of innings of the One Day International against Australia.

Davies was chosen for the award because of his "inspirational contribution to youth cricket in North Devon."

In taking over the administrative running of both the local Youth League and the District Coaches Association he has been able to significantly raise the profile of youth cricket. He and his team are also committed to up-skilling existing coaches and developing new ones in order to support the great work they have started and allow for continued success within the North Devon area.

Following the presentation, he said: "Super day, with heavy involvement in youth cricket it's not every day that you get the chance to see matches like this! Thanks to the ECB Coach Education Programme and Sky Sports for funding the programme, we hope it continues."

Champion was chosen for the award because of his "commitment to youth cricket in the North Devon area."

Over the past 24 years he has become a figurehead for coaching and youth cricket in North Devon and has been an inspiration to many a player. In particular, Tom Allin, who is now contracted for Warwickshire, is a fine example of how Champion has coached and developed youth players from club and district level to playing county age group cricket.

Following the presentation he said: "I had a fantastic day at a fantastic venue, everything was just perfect.
