Bideford ABCs Billy Stanbury topped the bill in Southampton on Friday night. Taking on Alex Hibberd from Golden Ring ABC, Stanbury started aggressively, pushing his opponent back to the ropes with power shots to the head and body. Hibberd proved a game competitor, though, matching him and returning with some lovely body shots to finish the stronger and edge a tight round. Stanbury started with the same tactic, again on the front foot trying to push Hibberd back. He found his break midway through the round, rocking Hibbed as he switched from body to head with two big right hooks. Hibberd was clinging on, trying to stay on his feet as Stanbury swarmed all over his opponent trying to finish him off, but the bell saved Hibbert as he looked to be finished. Hibbert came out recovered for the third round after a much-needed break, and the two boxers went toe-to-toe from start to finish. Hibberd landed some crunching body shots but they didnt phase Stanbury, who walked through everything that was chucked at him and kept replying with his own combinations. There was very little to split between the two boxers at the final bell, but the decision went in favour of the home boxer Hibberd. Stanbury did himself proud in defeat, picking up the award for Bout of the Night, picked by professional trainer Shane McGuigan (son of former world champion Barry McGuigan), who had nothing but praise for Stanburys performance.
