BIDEFORD ABC and colleagues from Barnstaple treated boxers from Sheffield to a training weekend away from the city.

Sheffield Burn Greave ABC were successful in obtaining funding for a training weekend away and chose to visit Bideford.

They started by joining the Bideford boxers for an evening of training at their new premises on the Clovelly Road industrial estate. Then came two mornings of training with boxers from Bideford and Barnstaple and more training at Westward Ho! in the afternoons.

Bideford club spokesman Jeff Facey said the Bideford and Barnstaple boxers had benefited from the different training methods and styles of their Sheffield counterparts, while Sheffield were impressed with the technique that local boxers had attained.

"The weekend was a win-win situation for Bideford, Barnstaple and Sheffield. Respective trainers were eager to impart their knowledge and experience to all boxers who attended. Local boxers gained further skills and training experience from the visiting club and Sheffield also gained valuable skills from the nationally successful clubs of Bideford and Barnstaple," he said. "Bideford welcome back their Sheffield counterparts and friends and may try to obtain funding for a return visit."

Sheffield trainer Phil Wood said the visit had "exceeded expectations.
