Bideford Amateur Boxing Club’s Jacob Stevenson is the new Western Counties champion.
Stevenson claimed the title after a unanimous win over Devonport ABC’s John Penfold in Bridgewater on Saturday night.
Stevenson started strongly, scoring with fast combinations and using fast footwork to stay out of any trouble.
His footwork helped him score more freely in the second, evading Penfold’s shots and landing his own. He landed shots to the head and body in the final round to seal his victory.
Bideford’s Tom Baldwin and Will Fishleigh were in action in Port Talbot.
Baldwin claimed a unanimous win over Cwmcarn’s Shane Andrew, making good use of his reach advantage and scoring well with his jab.
The Bideford boxer worked in right crosses and hooks off the jab in the second, and he stayed disciplined in the final round to go on to victory.
Fishleigh’s slow start cost him against Merlins Bridge ABC’s Dion Donovan.
Donovan started off with some fast jabs and it wasn’t until the second round that Fishleigh began finding his range.
The Bideford boxer gave everything in the last, giving Donovan a standing eight count with a right cross, but his opponent held on for a split decision win.
