BIDEFORD returned to winning ways after two league defeats with a 35-20 win over Tavistock in the Devon Intermediate Cup.

Bideford disposed of Tavistock on the way to winning last season’s tournament, but found them a far harder proposition this time.

With 10 minutes left the lead was only 23-20, a far cry from the 67-0 drubbing handed out last season.

Bideford team manager Dave Harris said: “We thought it was going to be the same as last season and got a surprise.

“Tavistock didn’t cave in this time and gave us a tough game.”

Bideford were never behind in the match after Ollie Wickett pocketed a penalty and at half time led 20-13.

James Buckland and Sam Olde had a try each – Olde’s an interception – with Wickett converting both and two penalties.

Richard Goldsby-West dropped two goals for Tavvy and converted a Duncan Law try.

A Wickett penalty opened up a 10-point lead, but Tavvy weren’t finished yet.

Scrum-half Dave Goldspeed shot over for the visitors with Goldsby-West converting to trim the lead to three points.

Bideford secured their passage to a date with Totnes in the next round with tries from Dave Fewings and Peter Hockridge.

Bideford Quins travelled to Totnes last Saturday in the Devon Merit Table, where they won 55-20.

Bideford are at home to St Ives in the Western Counties Division this Saturday.

Torrington lost 36-0 to Exeter Saracens in the Devon Intermediate Cup. Torrie travel to Veor this Saturday
