DESPITE - or because of - the bad weather, two cracking fish were landed at the weekend.Tony Gussin's small-eyed ray of 5,430 grams (11lb 15 1/2 ounces) was more than enough at 133% to take top in the first Barnstaple Rod 'n' Reelers roving competition of the year.Second went to Julian Stainer with a dogfish of 1,205g (2lb 10 1/2 oz) or 88.6% and third to Tony Werner with another "doggie" of 85.6%.The ray proved good enough only for second place at the North Devon League weigh in an hour-and-a-half later, when Kevin Legge of Combe Martin A arrived with a stonking bull huss of 14lb 8oz. His 161% fish gave him first and the best fish to be weighed in at a league heat this season. The ray, by then down to 11lb 11oz, managed second and Julian Stainer's dogfish was third for Triple Hook A, beating Dave Brook's conger of 16lb 9oz into fourth.The next heat is on Saturday, February 9, with the weigh in once again hosted by Rod 'n' Reelers at the Rolle Quay public house in Barnstaple at 7.30pm.The final dates are: March 15/16, weigh in at Bideford Angling Club; April 26/27 hosted by Combe Martin, weigh in at Braunton Cricket Club; May 17/18 Champion of Champions event, weigh in at Bideford.League totals are close: 1st Triple Hook A 39; joint 2nd Rod 'n' Reelers/Triple Hook B 38; 3rd Combe Martin A 34; 4th CM B/Bideford 29; 5th Appledore 28; 6th Soul Bros 9.
