BARNSTAPLE Colts avenged an early season defeat by Exmouth when the defeated the Cockles 8-7 to underline the improvement through the side.

The Barum forwards dominated with Josh Ovey, Matt Wallin and inspirational Sean Deasey ruling the line-out and Ryan Carter leading the defensive line well from inside centre.

Barum took the lead early in the second half with a 30-metre drop-goal by Carter.

Exmouth responded well with a Joe Parkin try a converted try by Howard Smith.

The resurgent Barum Boys marched down the field to batter the Exmouth line for the remaining 10 minutes.

The forwards exerted heavy pressure on their counterparts, who were visibly tiring. Rather than take the kicks made available through a string of penalties, Deasey chose to push for the try which eventually came as Zander Laval squeezed over for his fourth of the season to wrestle the lead back.

The conversion was missed but Barum were not in charity mood this week and denied Exmouth any sniff of victory to close out the final few minutes.

Barnstaple are due to visit Honiton this Saturday.
