RELATIONS between Paignton and Barnstaple have been strained a bit more after the latest spat between the two clubs.The Cherries were due to entertain Barum on Saturday in a 2nd XV game at Queens Park, but cancelled the game before lunchtime to save the North Devon side a near two-hour trip.The Queens Park pitch was frozen over when chairman Steve Lamswood had an early morning look at it and decided there was no prospect of playing.Barnstaple didn't take the news too well as it was beautifully sunny in North Devon - and thawing out nicely on the other side of the county. They suspected there were other reasons for calling the game off - such as Paignton not being able to raise a team.The Cherries said they knew the pitch would thaw out, but that conditions would be too muddy to play when it did.Paignton and Barnstaple had cordial relations until around this time last year when they fell out over a Devon Senior Cup game at Queens Park.Barnstaple travelled down for a Sunday game, having played a Western Counties match the day before, and refused to play because they didn't like the look of the pitch.Numerous attempts were made to play the game - none of them successful - before Paignton were handed a bye into the semi-finals.Relations between the two clubs weren't improved by an incident two Sundays ago when Paignton took a mini-bus load of U15s up Barnstaple for a game - only to discover there was no opposition to play against!A scratch game of Barum players assembled at short notice eventually kicked off more than an hour late.Paignton and Brixham could run into each other in the semi-finals of this season's Devon KO Cup, which could be interesting for all concerned.Firstly, though, Paignton have to defeat Ivybridge in one semi-final and Barnstaple have to win at Newton Abbot in the other.Barnstaple resume their South West Two campaign this Saturday when they entertain Clevedon.
