BARNSTAPLE beat Sidmouth 36-31 in their final warm-up game before the National Three South season starts at Weston this Saturday.

Barnstaple hit the ground running to go 31-10 up at the turn, but found it hard keeping the tempo up in the second half after making changes.

A planned 2nd XV game between the two sides was called off by Sidmouth, leaving Barum with excess players needing game time.

Sidmouth were 12-0 down before they knew it to an Iain Wilson try followed by a line-out drive over claimed by Phil Gordon. Josh Squire converted one from two.

When Barum dropped the ball in their own half Sidmouth made them pay with Tom Hodge running over for a try. Dan Retter converted and added a penalty for 12-10.

Three tries in the run up to half time - two up the wing by Jonny Carter and a third from new signing Gareth Espin - tipped the game Barum's way, or so it seemed.,

Sidmouth roared back into the game after the break with tries from Tom Wheaton and Nick Mills.

A second Wilson try gave Barum some breathing space, which was just as well as Retter converted his own try late on to leave a try in it.
