Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club and BID come together to put on August event
BARNSTAPLE will host its first Pilot Gig Regatta this summer.
Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club, in partnership with the Business Improvement District (BID) Barnstaple is preparing to host the event on Sunday, August 10, with the focus of the day centred on spring racing on the river.
The day is set to kick off at 1pm, with plenty of land based activities on The Strand for the whole family, including Morris dancing, Punch and Judy show, children’s funfair, story tellers and sea shanty singers.
The organisers are inviting as many local organisations as possible with interest in the River Taw to have a presence along the river front to promote what they do and engage with the general public.
Sue Rawle, BID co-ordinator, said: “In the BID business plan, one of the aims is to put on a river themed event with a view to attracting more visitors to Barnstaple and promoting greater use of the river and river frontage.
“I am really pleased to say that we now have a small committee of volunteers, headed up by Keith Baker, chairman of the gig club, who are keen to make this happen.”
Barnstaple Gig Club chairman Keith Baker said: “As a gig club, we would be very pleased to see this as an annual event on the gig calendar.
“Gig racing is becoming an increasingly popular sport and we welcome the chance to demonstrate what we do and also help promote our town and the River Taw at the same time.”
