Barnstaple were given a taste of what to expect in National Two South this season when they lost 31-8 to visiting Old Elthamians. The Old Boys led 23-5 at the half-time break against a side tipped to be among the pacestters - and if it wasnt done and dusted then it wasnt far off either. Even when Elthamians had a player sent off in the second half for foul play, prop Aaron Liffchak was red carded for striking out with an elbow, they more than held out for the last 25 minutes. By the end Elthamians were down to 12 men thanks to a couple of yellow cards, but it was long past the time when that would make a difference. Barum, who paraded ex-Albion skipper Jake Murphy and former Cornish All Black Ben Hilton for the first time, suffered at the boot of Elthamians kicker Tom White. White scored 21 of his sides point, mainly in kicks but also including a solo try in the first half. Tries from White and Max Wilkins gave Elthamians their half time lead. Matt Gohl had got a try back for the home side, peeling away from a line-out drive to get over. Jordan Petherbidge got Barum back to 23-8 with a penalty, but they were not able to get any closer. White landed another penalty and with seven minutes to go centre Ben Hough crossed wide on the right. Barnstaple face Redruth this Saturday for their first away game of the new season.
