Barnstaple got over their defeat at Henley with a 15-6 win over visiting London Irish Wild Geese in National League Two South, but it was a close-run thing.

Scoring chances were few and far between at either end at a wet and windy Pottington.

Irish were under pressure for a result as they are hovering just above the bottom three, and they didn’t make life easy for Barum.

Alex Sears put the visitors ahead with a penalty and added another just before half time.

Barum got on the board with a drive-over try credited to skipper Winston James.

Jordan Petherbidge booted Barum ahead on 54 minutes when he knocked over a penalty.

Ten minutes from time Barum opened up a nine-point lead thanks to a try from Gareth Evans that Petherbridge converted.

Hard-working prop Danny Southworth got the nod as Barum’s man of the match.

The result puts Barnstaple ninth in the table, with a trip to fifth-place Redingensians on Saturday.
