VETERANS RESULTS: In a reduced field due to the rain there were some high scores in the latest roll up. Returning after a lengthy spell of injuries Alan Vichion won with 40 points depriving John Ollier of his first victory on the back nine holes. Maurice Heather came third with 39 points. RND were beaten in the Emerton Court Knockout at Torquay. Both sides were level after the 5 matches but Torquay won the play off first hole.

This week, Portmore’s Hayden Morris was first in the division 2 stableford competition at the Tiverton Junior Open, while Jackie Carlton took first and the Ladies Cup in the club’s Lady Captain’s Day.

NORTH DEVON ROSEBOWL: In an exciting Saunton defeated RND 3-2 at Willingcott Valley. Saunton went into a quick 2-0 lead but RND fought back with two late wins. The final pairings left on the course went to the 21st where Kristian Mowatt and James Fielder overcame David George and Ollie Tanton.
Results - K Mowatt and J Fielder beat O Tanton and D George at 21st hole; A Ackland and Gary Hatch lost to J Mullen and T Yarde at 19th hole; J Nicholls and S Young beat J Mounce and R Hughes 5 and 3; D Barker and John Gillings lost to C Drew and P Griffin 2 down; F Coyle and Kevin Chugg beat D Tanton and C Worthington 7 and 5.
Saunton’s Alison Down and Rose Kirkham defeated Thurlestone 4 and 3 to win the Doris Wills-Little Bowl, the first time Saunton have won the trophy in 24 years.
SLOGGER’S ANNIVERSARY: Saunton Sloggers celebrate 40 years of golf and fellowship with Saunton Golf Club on Monday, September 17. Bill Bowley, a past captain and former president of Northwood Golf Club in Middlesex was involved in the first visit and continues to be a major influence. He has organised the celebration with Roger Grimmond, current vice-captain of Saunton, assisted by Adrian Granville-Smith and Les Smith.
This year there will be the usual match between 20 Sloggers and the club, preceded by a reception. Golf will be followed by a dinner where many anecdotes will be retold.
THUNDER AND LIGHTENING: Another successful Saunton Open Week was held in mixed weather conditions. The only casualty was the Mixed Foster Memorial Competition which had to be abandoned due to thunder and lightning.
SAUNTON PLATE: Won by Colin MacPherson who beat Steve Hunt 2 and 1 while the Ladies Knockout Final was won by Saunton Country Member Jan Ellis from Long Ashton who beat Ladies Captain Debbie Webb 4 and 3.
Emma Tayler shot a ladies course record on the East Course during the Killard-Leavy Cup competition.
There were two holes in one during the week. Tony Warren on the 5th on the East Course and Lee Martin on the 9th on the West.
