See the competitors off from Ilfracombe at 8am on Saturday (May 27) and welcome them home at 3pm
The spectacular sight of the Around Lundy Race returns to Ilfracombe this Saturday.
More than 30 entries have been received from yacht clubs up and down the country for the Ilfracombe Yacht Club annual event.
The first competitors can be seen leaving the harbour at 8am, with the fastest yachts returning around 3pm.
Renowned as one of the Bristol Channel’s premier events, it takes competitors from Ilfracombe, around the back of Lundy Island and returning to Ilfracombe.
It may only be 35 miles there and back, but the skippers have some of the strongest tides and currents to contend with, which can see some rough conditions, especially at the north and south ends of Lundy, and the legendary Hen and Chickens and Black Rock areas.
IYC president Bert Gear said: “Unfortunately last years event had to be cancelled at the last minute due to severe gales; we just didn’t want to send the yachts out in those dangerous conditions,
“We are pleased to welcome back so many of our old friends again this year, and with the weather set fair, we should have a good race.”
