Boats from across the South West converged on Ilfracombe on Saturday for Ilfracombe Yacht Club’s Around Lundy Race.

A total of 39 boats entered the event, with sizes ranging from 21' to 40'.

Entrants were faced with an easterly wind, a change from the usual prevailing westerly wind.

The overall winner was Neil White, who was top of the pile after handicaps with his crew from Swansea on Dark Bear

The first Ilfracombe boat home was Gus Davies and his crew on Shamara, who not only won the Mason Trophy for best Ilfracombe boat, but finished first in class and third overall.

The day started with a brisk easterly wind, a change from the normal prevailing westerly wind we normally see, So with a following wind spinnakers and cruising shuts were the order of the day at the start.

After setting off at 8am, skippers and crews sat back and enjoyed the run down to the island, before skirting Black Rock on the South end, with its notorious tidal race.

The yachts then traversed up the west side of the island, leaving the dangerous 'hen and chickens' before heading back to Ilfracombe.

The first boat back over the finishing line just before 3pm.
