TELEVISION presenter and archaelogist Dr Mark Horton, known for programmes such as Time Team and Time Flyers, has become Patron of Bideford 500 - a project aimed at using the town's rich maritime heritage and links with America as the focus for regeneration initiatives. His appointment was announced at the Burton Art Gallery, when more than 80 people attended a public meeting to hear researcher Pauline Smith reveal results of the first phase of the project. She explained that it was because of Mr Horton's talks last year at Bideford's ancient Manor Court ceremony and the Appledore Book Festival that Bideford 500 was conceived. "Dr Horton's appointment as Patron and the wonderful response from local people are further indications of the growing momentum here to celebrate and participate in Bideford's unique heritage and maritime achievements and to use this to build the town's future," said Pauline. Bringing the stories of Bideford's unique 500-year connections to America back to life could act as springboards for a variety of regeneration initiatives in the town, she said.
