Appledore Pilot Gig Club rowers were not afraid to take on the mighty Cornish on Saturday in Falmouth.
Attending the sprint event for the first time, Appledore were the only representatives from North Devon. Many of the top clubs from the World Championships in the Scillies took part, making 19 in total.
The competition proved to be tough, but the Appledore men’s and ladies’ crews have been putting in the hours training and were ready to test themselves against the best in some perfect rowing conditions off Gyllyngvase Beach.
The ladies’ A crew shrugged off the competition in the heats; in the final though, they found themselves at the rear of the pack.
After a massive surge of effort in the last 100m of the race, they powered to a fantastic fourth place, with Mounts Bay taking the trophy.
The men’s A crew suffered a delayed start in their final, but quickly made up the lost ground and fought all the way to the finish line in a closely contested race. They were pleased to take sixth position with Falmouth the winners.
Appledore also fielded a men’s B crew who achieved a place in the quarter-finals, and took part in the mixed vets’ race teaming up with a crew from Truro.
