North Devon club finish third overall at Newlyn

APPLEDORE Pilot Gig Club travelled to Newlyn on Saturday to join a host of Cornish crews for the first of the post-Scillies events.

The Zennor Gig Club Regatta, held in the waters of Mount’s Bay, is a chance for the crews to consolidate their positions on home territory after the excitement of the World Championships.

The clubs of North Devon are rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with after years of domination by the Cornish, and it was Appledore’s turn this weekend to put the North Devon rowing scene firmly on the map.

With a massive 17 clubs taking part, a calm sea, clear blue sky and St Michael’s Mount as a backdrop, the colourful gigs presented a spectacular sight as they lined up for the start of the strenuous 2½km course.

Appledore (Whitford) came in overall third position - a best ever result for the club against such prestigious opposition - behind Mounts Bay (Kensa) in first and Coverack (Lark) second.

The ladies’ B crew picked up the club’s best result of the day, picking up an impressive second, with the men’s vets and the mixed crews finishing fourth in their respective races.

The ladies’ A crew and men’s A both finished fifth, and the men’s B crew came home in seventh.
