APPLEDORE Pilot Gig Club crews will be taking to the water and the roads on Saturday on a marathon journey to raise awareness and raise funds.

Starting from their home village at 9am they will row across the River Torridge to Instow before gathering at the Commodore Hotel. From there they will be taking to the road to push their gig to Barnstaple.

"The idea is to raise awareness of our club, invite new members and to collect any donations people might like to give," said spokesman Jeff Pearce. "We have members from just 11 years old to in their 60s and travel to events over a wide area. We had crews in the world championships in the Scillies and over the past three weeks have competed at Rock, Swanage and Salcombe."
