South West under 16s defend title with a strong showing from Croyde-based academy girls
MEMBERS of Croyde’s Academy of Beach Sports were out in force representing the South West at the Inter-Regional Championships at the University of East London.
Twelve Academy girls represented the South West, with Ellie Austin, Ellie Cranch, Anaya Evans, Helen Farr, Niamh Marshall and Sophie Watts playing for the under 16s. Nicole and Lauren Short, Lauren Huggins, Rebecca Fallow, Emma Featherstone and Holly Coles were selected for the under 14s.
Over the two days of competition, the under 16s did not lose a set, beating rival teams from Yorkshire, London, the East, South East and the Midlands. In the final against London, they again exerted their dominance in attack, winning in straight sets to take the National Indoor Inter-Regional title for the second consecutive year.
In the under 14s, the South West fielded an A and a B team, with some strong performances helping them to fifth and sixth placed finishes over the two-day event.
The boys’ under 15s had also set their sights on taking the title, but an early defeat to the East in the round robin tournament all but ended that dream.
They were always playing for second place after that loss, but again succumbed on the second day to a fired up London team 2-0.
