BARNSTAPLE Swimming Club member Abi Jeffery went to the ASA South West Youth Championships at Millfield School to compete against the best in the West of England - and came away with the right to swim in the National Youth Championships in Sheffield in July.Abbi qualified by swimming a lifetime best of 2 min 27.15secs in the heats of the 14/15yrs 200m backstroke. She finished in a creditable fifth place in the final and also gained three more personal best times in other events. A small squad of six Barnstaple swimmers attended this first gala of this year's championships and competed against very strong opposition. Eva Murphy was the club's only other finalist, competing in the 14/15yrs 200m freestyle. Mini-leaguevictoryNORTH Devon youngsters led the way in the second gala of the Devon mini-league swimming competition held in Tiverton.After victory in the opening round, Barnstaple Swimming Club again came out on top, closely followed by Torridgeside SC.Final placings were: 1, Barnstaple 188pts; 2, Torridgeside 155; 3,Crediton 125; 4, Tiverton 115.Barnstaple gained 19 individual event and seven relay wins. Carolyn Edwards, Caitlin O'Malley, Megan Clark and Sam Middlemass were particularly impressive in their solo events with two victories apiece. The boys 12/13 years relay team was in fine form, also gaining two first places.
