The inaugural Exmoor Open Water Swim took place on Sunday, with 500 people racing in Wimbleball Lake.

Entrants were able to choose between a 2km or 4km course, and kayakers from Bideford and Exmoor canoe clubs were on hand to ensure entrants were looked after.

Nils Young took first place overall, completing the event in 51mins and 33secs.

After spending much of the swim side by side, Young beat Bristol’s Mark Richards by 30 seconds after pulling away in the final 800metres, with the runner up clocking a time of 52mins and 4secs.

Third overall, and taking gold in the women’s 4km race was Exeter’s Vikki Thompson, who finished in 53mins and 40secs.

The 2km course saw 12-year-old Oliver Heard finish first with a time of 26mins and 7secs. Ben Haslett (26:24) was 17 seconds behind.

Kathryn Saddler was the fastest female, finishing in 29mins and 19secs, with 12-year-old Macey Barrett from Taunton (31:50) second.

Event director Mike Morris said: “Open Water swimming is a massive growth activity and it is so great to see kids aged 12 swimming with 70 year olds – we are so grateful for South West Lakes Trust to allow us to put on the event.”
