South Molton's top 10 rating for pannier market

North Devon Gazette

For the second time running, South Molton Country Pannier Market has been voted as one of the top ten markets in Great Britain, an incredible achievement and recognition for the ingenuity of all involved in this North Devon gem. Â

More than 30,000 votes were cast in the Great British Market Awards run by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) and the South Molton market has again found itself in the running for the prestigious title of the best market in the country. Â

For the last three years, South Molton has been bucking the trend by remaining fully booked at their Thursday and Saturday markets, with almost 70 stalls holders attending each event. Â

The market was well supported when it held it’s “Essential Stall Markets” during lockdown for food stalls only. Since re-opening fully, there has been an overwhelming demand for stalls with more than 200 enquiries received in the last 12 months and, even in the traditionally quieter month of January, they are turning bookings away.Â

Market supervisor, William Tyacke, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been voted as one of the top markets in the country again. Our markets not only serve our local community, but also have proved to be very popular with people visiting the area. Â

“We take pride in offering an exciting variety of stalls, showcasing some of the best products the Westcountry has to offer. Our traders work hard to provide attractive and interesting stalls and this is testament to their efforts, as well as the work of the market staff. We would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”Â

The market will now be entered into the next phase of the competition where a mystery shopper will visit the market and a panel of market industry experts will make the final decision on the overall winner.Â

The decision will be announced at the Great British Market Award ceremony on Thursday 3rd February in Birmingham.Â
