Villagers invited to view proposals for Bratton Fleming scheme

PEOPLE are being invited to learn more about a proposed solar energy farm near Bratton Fleming.

Plans for the 40-acre site on land 800m to the east of the village will be on show at a drop-in session at the village hall on Friday, from 2pm to 8pm.

Visitors will be able to quiz developer Wessex Solar Energy about the 5MW scheme which if approved, would generate renewable energy for up to 1,800 homes in North Devon.

Wessex Solar submitted proposals to North Devon Council last month after a series of technical and environmental studies had been completed. A decision on the planning application is expected within the next six weeks.

The company said it plans to employ local people and source local materials during the three-to-four month construction period and the operational lifetime of the project, which is up to 25 years.

It estimates that the council will receive more than more than 100,000 per annum in business rates from the project, an estimated 2.5m for the lifetime of the project.

Wessex said that sheep will still be able to graze between the ground-mounted solar panels. The company chose the site due to its reduced visibility from the surrounding area, and good access to road and electricity transmission networks.
