Soggy Bottom success

TWO young members of the Taw Velo Cycle Club, both pupils at Pilton Community College, have achieved success in the Soggy Bottoms 2010/11 mountain bike race series.

Fin Clay and Jack Hewlett from Bratton Fleming won first and third places respectively in the juvenile category for the whole series.

The Soggy Bottoms are a series of three mountain bike cross country races which take place at Newnham Park in Plymouth during the winter months. Each lap is around 5kms and in the juvenile category the racers have to complete two laps. They include some heart pumping climbs, some tricky and technical single track, the ever popular ‘bomb holes’; and some fast and furious descents.

Fin and Jack, racing for their club Taw Velo, took part in all three events and their consistent strong performances led to their well-deserved places in the top three for the whole series.

Their performance has not gone unnoticed and both boys have been nominated by British Cycling to attend an Olympic Talent Programme Regional School of Racing at Haldon Forest.

Taw Velo is a Barnstaple-based cycle club with youth and senior sections. The club is committed to encouraging young riders - who can join from the age of eight - and is already achieving notable success in both road and MTB races.
