Barnstaple to launch Every Can Counts recycling scheme
BARNSTAPLE is leading the way with the promotion of a new drinks can recycling campaign.
The town will be the first in the South West to launch an Every Can Counts programme at an event in the Green Lanes Shopping Centre on Thursday, December 1.
Shoppers and retailers will be able to find out more about the scheme, being introduced by BID Barnstaple in partnership with Barnstaple Town Council.
Retailers will be offered free recycling boxes and promotional materials to encourage staff and shoppers to recycle their empty drink cans. There will also be a chance to win a Christmas hamper by guessing the number of cans in a bale.
Dane Stanley, chairman of BID Barnstaple said: “We’re really excited to be rolling out the Every Can Counts programme right here in the centre of Barnstaple.
“We truly believe in environmental sustainability, and we are delighted to be able to engage with our shoppers and allow them to recycle their own cans.
“We hope other town centres will follow our example and introduce Every Can Counts.â€
Cans are being collected and processed by local community recycling enterprise, Community Resources, a not-for-profit organisation based in Ilfracombe with a satellite unit in Barnstaple.
Each can recycled saves energy and raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Reusing recycled metals can save as much as 95 per cent of the energy needed to make cans from virgin ores. Recycled drinks cans can be back on the shelves within six weeks.
Rick Hindley of Every Can Counts, said more than nine billion drink cans are sold in the UK each year and of these around 30 per cent are consumed ‘on the go’.
He said: “We have high hopes for this partnership and hope to use our experience in Barnstaple to develop further projects with other town centres and retail sites in the future.â€
