Northam reader recalls George V Silver Jubilee parade

WITH the royal wedding less than two months away, the North Devon Gazette is asking readers to share their memories of historic royal events, past and present.

Cynthia Snowden, 81 from Northam, remembers the Silver Jubilee of George V on May 6, 1935.

In this old black and white photograph, Cynthia is pictured in a parade leaving the western end of Appledore, by her father, Percy Reed, who worked at the Northam Council Offices and lived to the great age of 94.

Cynthia and her sister Enid Sherborne (nee Reed) are the two girls dressed in red, white and blue dresses made from crepe paper. They are pictured with their mother Irene Reed who was the first librarian at the Appledore Library and was 97 when she died.

The Gazette would love to hear about your memories of royal events in North Devon – and we’d also like to hear about any special plans you’re making to celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton’s big day on April 29.
